Why is older people wearing diapers discouraged in today's society?

Diapers are just a type of underwear that holds in bodily wastes. That last part is what separates them from other undergarments. So why do people think older people wearing diapers is weird? I'm not talking about preschool and elementary school kids. I'm talking about people 18 and older. What are your views on that?
